  • It's Time to Show Me What You Are Capable Of

Written by Dan / 7 days ago / 0 Comments

I hope that my work with you has helped you get a better job faster.  When I lead job seeker workshops I often remind job seekers that they will not be unemployed forever.  Everything changes.  It could just as easily be me asking you for a connection, a lead, a job tomorrow.

And now it is I who need your help.  On Wednesday Monster laid off 400 people, including some of the most talented people I've ever had the honor of working with. They're all central MA based, unless indicated otherwise.  These are A-Team players and were in the following ..

My friend Moises Lopez of Accenture (@Moiseslopez) is a top tier recruiter. His wisdom and insights have been invaluable to me into how an organization can efficiently and effectively secure talent using traditional, online, and social networking methods in a time when 14 million are unemployed and millions more are actively looking for work and better work.

A while ago, Moises and I were talking about ..

I was invited to participate in a panel discussion with some very important people who are trying to be truly helpful in finding people jobs, fixing the economy, and making sure education is valuable and relevant for career growth.

Listen to the recording, and you'll hear me offer up sage insights like "The business of business is business," and "you should always expect business to do what's in the best interest of business." as I challenge the leaders to do better, think harder, and create a better path to better education and better jobs.

  • Writing Your Obituary Can Help You Find Your Career

    Written by Dan / on 04/14/2011 / 0 Comments

While preparing for a workshop on the Afflictive Emotions and the Job Search for the Westford Job Seeker's Network, I ran across Roz Savage's blog and how she found her destiny. Roz found herself in a management consulting career for 11 years, although she knew from Day 1 that this was not the career she wanted.

Married, with a mortgage, and an unhappy career, one day Roz did something brilliant.  She wrote her obituary.  Actually, she wrote two obituaries.  The first was an obituary worth reading - the she wanted.  It was a story of ..

  • 5 Ways Older Workers Can Trump Younger Workers and Land the Job

    Written by Dan / on 01/19/2011 / 0 Comments

The layoffs of the past decade combined with the recent deep recession have cast many experienced "older" workers to the unemployment lines.  And, as you are probably aware, the time spent in these lines is longer than any time in our nation's history.  I meet and talk with job seekers all the time, and consistently hear stories about recruiters passing over experienced workers with veiled comments on overqualified, or a desire for a different "type" of worker.  If you're an older worker, here's 5 ways you can win against younger workers.

    1.   Get Plugged In - Many older workers have ..

  • Job Openings are Outpacing New Hires

    Written by Dan / on 10/27/2010 / 0 Comments

Good news out there, the Department of Labor reports that job openings began exceeding the number of new hires.  That means there will be a larger pool for you to choose from.  At first glance, it would make sense for there to be a direct 100% correlation between job openings and new hires - one opening, one hire, but hires trail openings because the hiring process takes time.  Also, as you know, companies will pull back job postings, hire internal candidates, and sometimes not post "real" jobs they plan to hire for.

View this as a positive sign and use ..

Job Seeker Innovation of the Week

    Megan Cummins' Business Card

These days, job seekers are doing anything to stand out.  Resume clouds, guerilla tactics, and informational interview two-steps are some examples.  Megan Cummins came up with a creative business card that potential employers are unlikely to forget.  As Megan puts it, "Let's be honest, we all know what you're saying when you hand someone your business card. Might as well embrace that elephant and thrown in a little entertainment to make it memorable."  Her unique business card has appeared in two publications:
